My Dear Friend Bethany

I have decided to start blogging again. I love writing, as I should, since I am an English teacher. It is something that has always come fairly easy to me, and as such it is something that I enjoy doing. Blogging is always slightly stressful to me though because the world is your oyster, and then it becomes a little overwhelming. However, I have been thinking a lot about one of my dearest friends, Bethany. There is so much that I owe to her friendship, and have decided to write a blog to commemorate and celebrate all of the fabulous things that Bethany has added to my life.

Our friendship began when I moved out to Utah. She was one of the first people that I met that was also from Dallas, so naturally she was fabulous (even if she was wearing nike's with her khakis, a fashion faux pas she would never dream of doing now). She hired me to work at Gymboree because I was from Dallas, and she actually didn't really like me too much at first. She thought I was too stressed about folding clothes, and not stressed enough about selling clothes. To be fair though, the Gymboree I had worked at in Lewisville was very slow, and so when I would come in to work at night, that is all that they wanted me to do. The store that I transferred to in Utah was much busier, and generally Bethany doesn't like new people (a common fact that I now know), and being new didn't help my cause. To be perfectly honest I was a little intimidated by her. However, we became friends after I stayed at work until 2 or 3 in the morning getting stuff ready for a big sale.

My first memory of really hanging out with Bethany, was getting pizza (mushroom I am sure, a love of mushrooms is yet another thing we boned over), and watching Pride and Prejudice. I remember grudgingly watching it, I had previously tried to watch Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. I had wanted to love both of those shows, but always regretted trying to watch them as I found them boring, and hard to follow. Bethany insisted that I watch the 1995 BBC version BEFORE I could watch the new Kiera Knightly version. Bethany explained everything that was going on, all of the nuaunces that make Pride and Prejudice a classic. I fell in love with the movie(s), and the book. I LOVE Pride and Prejudice. I just finished watching the 1995 version, and was reminded of the beginning of our friendship. I have watched it so many times that would could definitely sit and watch it, and quote lines from it.

My favorite Mr. Darcy quote.

Bethany has also influenced how I decorate my home. I remember going over to perfectly shabby chic bungalow, and admiring her decor. When we first became friends she had been married for a couple of years, and I was a freshman in college. I would go to her home, and think one day I want my house to be decorated like this. One of my favorite things about Bethany is that we would hang out and show each other things we wanted to get for our homes. She introduced me to Restoration Hardware, and I convinced her to love Pottery Barn again. Pottery Barn should really thank me because she had a couple of bad experiences with them, and was a firm believer that you should never buy anything from there.

My mom and sisters are always talking about my photo walls and how much they love them. However, I basically copied Bethany's. I remember helping her put together her photo wall, and loving it so much that I decided I needed to do the same thing somewhere in my home.

Bethany taught me to love art. I am most appreciative of this. Art used to stress me out. I liked it, but I am way too anal, and it would stress me out that I couldn't make things look the way they looked in my head. When I decided to not be a dental hygenist because I LITERALLY COULD NOT survive another science class, she encouraged me to take an Art History class. I fell in love. I just love studying the humanities. I believe that things that become a classic have some sort of universal truth to them. That good literature, art, and music stand the test of time because people of any time period can relate or be inspired by that piece of art. The humanities are what make us human, and therefore we should study them carefully, and learn all that we can from them.

Pilgrimage to Cythera by Antoine Watteau. Beautiful rococo style painting that shows the three stages of love.

She made me into a feminist. One of my first large papers I had to write when I became an English major was a feminist manifesto. Speaking of the injustices suffered by women through out history. In writing this paper I became obsessed with Marie Antoinette and the negative image that has been placed on her. She is really an exquisite woman, and she overcame so many obstacles, from being sent away from home to live in a foreign land, to trying to make the best of a marriage where her husband didn't love her, to losing one of her children, and all that we remember of her is a saying that she didn't even say. "Let them eat cake."
Bethany is also my favorite foodie. I miss having her around to go try new restaurants and foods with. I never dared eat duck until she made me try it, and it turns out that I love Chevre cheese. Bethany taught me the importance of good stationary, and now I am smidge bit of a stationary snob.

Above all else though, Bethany is like an older sister that I never had, and was so kind to me while I was an annoying college freshman. She would patiently listen to my boy woes, and we would discuss at length whether or not the boy I was crushing on at the time liked me. She would help me compose witty texts, and analyze text messages I got back in return. You know all the annoying things that singles do. I love her so much, and I am so happy that she is happy now (even though she lives way too far away now).

Things I'm Dying to Have For My House

I cannot wait to have my house decorated the exact way I have envisioned in my head. The one thing that keeps me working at my current job even though it's not my favorite job is the thought that I will get my pension in August after I've been there for 5 years. An eternity. (Most people don't even last a year.) With my pension I plan on getting a few of things that I've been wanting for a LONG time and lusting after in my Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn Catalogs month after month. I really want my main floor of my house to French Country Shabby Chic with a navy and oatmeal color palatte. Then for the woods I want to mix and match antique white woods with espresso. Needless to say once it is complete it will be wonderful!

I love these chairs for in my living room:

Then I want to get this couch and have ruffle skirt added around the bottom of it:

That's my living room... the current furniture will go down in the basement. Then for my dinning room I want it to look like this:

But with this color of table:

And these chairs:

I need this table because it has a leaf, and my current table just isn't big enough for when I have all of my family over for dinner, and I love to cook. While we are speaking of cooking... I love this china. I think it will be soo pretty with my cobalt blue fiestaware I currently have and it will mix and match well together with my current china:

Finally I LOVE this and have been in love with it for over 2 years now and it is longing to have a home on my landing on the way to the 2nd floor of mi casa.

Except I want it in cream with gold accents, as pictured at BallardDesigns.com
I couldnt get the picture of the cream with gold accents large enough to be able to post it on here.

I have decided to update my blog more often. With that said here is the start of something fabulous. So Kelsey, and whomever else reads this blog, prepared to be amazed. Haha. (Kelsey is my sister if you are someone who is randomly reading my blog which seems highly unlikely, but just in case).

Where do I begin?

Well I love Art History, and I would love to be an Art History Major, however, Utah Valley University does not offer that as a major or a minor, so I am an English major with a minor in the humanities. One day I eventually want to go back to school and get my masters in Art History as it is something I am truely passionate about and I long for the day when I have tons of extra money and can go museum hopping around the world seeing wonderful art and architecture.

Getting to the point though, this last week on Ovation there have been some absolutely wonderful shows on about art history, specifically about art crimes. I loved it. I found myself hurrying home after a long day at work so that I could sit by the fire and watch tv. I will say this as well. I have not really been a big Rubens fan, naked curvy girls are not my favorite thing to see even though I myself am slightly more curvy (but if my diet goes as planned I will be substantially less curvy by the time summer comes around). However, there was a beautiful painting of his that was stolen and then the person who stole it was trying to sell it. Scandalous! I loved it and since I loved it so much here is a picture of it for you to marvel at. Hope you enjoy... Nevermind. I've looked for almost an hour with no luck. If I am bored tomorrow I continue my search, but I'm too tired to look for it any longer tonight.

Then on Saturday, Bethany and I went out for dinner at Biaggis, which was wonderful as always. They have the BEST bread pudding. I had never had it before and Bethany who loves it says I should never get it from anywhere else because I would be sorely disappointed, because appearanty Biaggis i the best bread pudding she has ever had.

We also went to see Country Strong which was amazing, and it has inspired me to listen to country music more often. I was a little diappointed that they showed Austin's skyline (which I didn't even know existed) but they neglected to show the best skyline in the state of Texas... Dallas'! Crazy Hollywood people.

Sunday I went to church, I was late but I have decided better a little late than not at all, although I am now striving to get there on time. Even though it is at 9 am on sunday morning. Ugh, we have weekends to sleep in, not to wake up at our usual time!

Grandma Dianne, lovingly referred to as Grandma D, is back from her trip to Alabama, so of course Coco and I stopped by to visit her this evening. It was wonderful. Coco is planning on going over to hang out with Grandma tomorrow so that she is not home from 830 am to 700 pm all by herself. Coco is a smidge spoiled but EVERYONE loves her. She's alseep next to me as we speak. She is plum exhausted from her busy day of napping. Haha.

I dont really look forward to school or work tomorrow, BUT the thing that is keeping me going is knowing that I have Wednesday to Friday of this week off from work. Yippee!

Why did I used to go to sleep in my bra?

To answer that question I have no idea. The girls dont need to be perky all night. No wonder my mom used to make fun of me and kels for sleeping with our bras on. The girls need a break. Maybe it's my feminist presentation that I just recently did, and we were talking about showing a clip from a bra burning in class, that made me start to think about what a pain bras really are (although they are useful, they just aren't the most comfy thing in the world to wear).

Now, don't get me wrong. I am all for bras, but why wear one when you are going to bed and you are in your comfies (as Kels would say) or your cozies (as Bethany would say). The point of getting ready for bed is to be comfy. I also enjoy a hot pair of jeans that makes your bunns look amazing, but I dont go to bed wearing that.

All I am saying is that when you go to bed you should be comfy and that my mom was correct in mocking me. With that, all I have left to say is good night.

Things That Have Happened While David's Been Gone...

I am so excited for David to get back home. He gets home on December 19th for Christmas, and then yesterday he told me that his AIT has been changed to only 19 weeks long, so he should be back home for good, around March 11th. It is going to be so nice to see him again. I can have him home to change lightbulbs that are up way high, and to watch Glee episodes with. When he gets finished with his training, I'm going to go out to visit him and then we can see all of the sights and hang out for a little bit in Georgia together.

While he has been gone I finally won, our baby name debate, and I get to choose our girls names. I'd say what they are, but I dont want anyone to steal them from me. Trust me they are fabulous, and when I have my first baby you'll find out, because I'm sure I'll have a little girl first. We are going to wait until I am finished with school until we have a lil Brownie (Brownie meaning a baby of Madison and David Brown) so in about 2 years.

Speaking of Brownies, I normally just make them from the box, but I decided with my new last name, it would be a shame for me to not have an AMAZING homemade brownie recipe. Turtle brownies are my personal favorite, but mint brownies are also a good choice as well. I will keep you posted for when I do find a recipe I love and I'll post the directions for everyone to be able to try out.

Other fun things that have happened while David has been gone. Kelsey had her baby and I am now a proud aunt. Kensington Lowe is the CUTEST baby you've ever seen and has the prettiest blue eyes, although, I'm sure they will turn brown, because both Brian and Kelsey have brown eyes. She makes the cutest sounds and we enjoy girls nights at my house while Kels and Bri go on dates. I'm excited for her to get a little bit older and she can help me make cookies or we can have tea parties or play with baby dolls together while Mr. and Mrs. Lowe are out on the town. This weekend Kensi and I are going to be hanging out together while her madre and padre go to the U game. Kensi and I haven't decided what we are going to do fun while they are at the U game. Kensi whispered in my ear that she is really a BYU fan, so we may watch the Cougars play or we may just wear our navy and white and go shopping together instead.

Also Joslyn, one of my best friends from high school, got engaged and is getting married on June 11, 2011! So now I finally get to visit Dallas, with David. I hope he loves it as much as I do. I'm just excited to be able to go to to the Galleria, and to be able to see the skyline, and play tour guide of my city to my hubby.
I'm halfway done with The Help which is really good book if you haven't read it yet. I can't wait to read it tonight and find out what is going on with Stuart and Skeeter. I really hope they end up getting married. Don't tell me if they break up. I'd also love for Minny to come cook for me. She sounds like such a good cook and just reading about what she's cooking makes me hungry. Now i'm craving some fried okra and barbeque chicken. Delish.

Thats pretty much all the high points of what has happened while David has been gone. I'm sure that David's being gone is why the Cougars are doing so poorly too. They need they're biggest fan back so that they can do well. So I'm sure that next season will be better. Well tata for now.
